Bratanov’s Private Reserve series represents the ultimate in winemaking, where the wines are genuinely pampered at every step by hand. All wines are bottled in the best vintages only; barrel-aging is at least 24 months and subsequent maturation in bottle at least 12 months.

Rubin is a new star in Bulgaria’s red wine scene. A cross of Nebbiolo and Syrah, Rubin was developed in the mid-twentieth century in Bulgaria. Up to this moment, no one really knew how a great Rubin tastes, because no one had taken the efforts to make it. In the warm, dry regions of Southern Bulgaria, Rubin develops an incredible concentration of flavors and deep color, due to the level of anthocyanins, which is higher than in Cabernet Sauvignon.

The vintage:

The 2017 vintage was drier than the previous years, but for the mid-ripening Rubin it concentrated the flavors. The grapes were hand-picked on September 7 with a perfect balance of ripeness and acidity.

in the vineyard:

Own vineyards near the village of Shishmanovo, South Sakar.

in the cellar:

Hand-picked grapes, hand-sorted, fermented entirely with natural yeasts. After spontaneous fermentation in a stainless steel tank, the wine matures for 3 years in barrels of different volumes (225, 400 and 500 l) and oak origin: Bulgarian, Hungarian and French. Bottled on June 6, 2020; released in March 2022 after a year and a half aging in bottle in a temperature-controlled cellar.

In The Glass:

Lush and opulent, Rubin reveals a velvety texture, delivered with wave after wave of mulled plum, blackberries, dark figs and chocolate. Flashes of coffee and fresh mint let the fruit shine through. The wine is dark and brooding on the palate, with ripe generous anise, white pepper, leather and porcini framed by fine-grained tannins. Hedonistic experience and terrific length. Still in its youth, but delicious to drink now.

Serving:

Cooled at 16°C, after at least 15 minutes of decanting.

Recommended Cellaring:

4-8 years
