Bratanov’s Private Reserve series represents the ultimate in winemaking, where the wines are genuinely pampered at every step by hand. All wines are bottled in the best vintages only; barrel-aging is at least 24 months and subsequent maturation in bottle at least 12 months.

The vintage:

The 2016 vintage was one of the most balanced years of the past decade, especially favorable for Syrah. Abundant sunshine, the right amount of rain and a warm, sunny fall all contributed to excellent balance in the grapes. The grapes were hand-picked on September 20 in small crates with optimal sugars, acids, and high concentration of polyphenols.

in the vineyard:

Own vineyards near the village of Shishmanovo, South Sakar; 44 hectares with south-west exposure overlooking the Maritsa River.

Soil: sedimentary and volcanic rocks, the most ancient soil in Bulgaria.

Altitude: 180 m

Average age of the vines: 11 years

Planting density: 4,130 per ha

Low-trained double Guyot

in the cellar:

Hand-sorted, fermented entirely with natural yeasts; the great condition of the grapes allowed us to do a longer pre- and post-fermentation maceration; spontaneous malolactic fermentation.

The wine is aged in Bulgarian, Hungarian, and French barrels of different capacity, 228 L, 400 L, and 500 L for 30 months. Bottled at the end of May 2019.

In The Glass:

Dense and warm, with terrific aromas of dark figs, roasted plum and espresso leading to a ripe, full palate of black currant, spices and tar. The wine carries the warmth of the South Sakar terroir, offering a feast of dark, lush fruit wrapped around a warm graphite core. The expressive, mineral-laden finish echoes on with intensity and harmony.

Recommended Cellaring:

4-8 years
